Essential for facing rain, snow, and wind, waterproof coats are designed to keep you dry while offering good breathability during outdoor activities. They mainly serve as an outer layer (shell) and can be worn alone or over insulating layers depending on the season.
Depending on the model, different membrane technologies (such as multi-layer waterproof-breathable membranes) are used to prevent water from penetrating while allowing body moisture to escape. Some jackets also use water-repellent treatments (DWR) to make water bead up on the surface of the fabric.
Waterproof coats come in several styles:
-
2 layers: lightweight and versatile, ideal for everyday or occasional use
-
2.5 layers: more compact and breathable, perfect for active pursuits
-
3 layers: more robust and durable, designed for demanding mountain conditions
There are also differences in terms of cut, level of protection, breathability, and technical details (adjustable hoods, sealed seams, waterproof closures, underarm ventilation) to meet the specific needs of each activity: hiking, trekking, skiing, mountaineering, or urban use.
